The Call to Action on Sustainable Urbanisation across the Commonwealth has been developed jointly by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP) and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), in collaboration with the Rwandan Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA), the Rwandan Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC) and The Prince’s Foundation, with support from other Commonwealth organisations, governmental, professional and technical partners. UN-Habitat World Urban Forum 11, June 2022
As part of the Eleventh Session of the World Urban Forum in Katowice, Poland between 26 and 30 June 2022, Commonwealth partners in close collaboration with The Prince’s Foundation and the Government of Rwanda, hosted a networking event focused on the adoption of the Declaration on Sustainable Urbanisation by Commonwealth Heads of Government in Kigali, Rwanda, and considered the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-level way to close capacity, data, governance, and finance gaps. Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, June 2022
During an intense week of activity in Kigali, Commonwealth partners, city mayors, ministers, representatives of civil society, built environment professionals, technical experts, development partners and private sector partners from all regions of the Commonwealth came together to promote the Call to Action with the support of key stakeholders including Rwandan Minister of Infrastructure, Hon Dr Ernest Nsabimana and UN-Habitat’s Executive Director, HE Maimunah Mohd Sharif. A series of events emphasised the importance of effective partnerships and collaboration between all levels of government and other key stakeholders to ensure sustainable urban development. It also highlighted ongoing initiatives which illustrate the way in which the Commonwealth is already coming together to develop solutions that are both scalable and replicable.

On completion of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM2022) in Kigali, Rwanda, Heads of Government adopted a Declaration to prioritise a greater focus on sustainable urbanisation to address the impacts of rapid urbanisation and climate change in the Commonwealth, to ensure liveable cities, towns and villages for all Commonwealth citizens. UN High-level Meeting on the Call to Action
On the eve of the High-Level Meeting of the General Assembly on the implementation of the New Urban Agenda, key Commonwealth partners in close collaboration with The Prince’s Foundation and the Government of Rwanda, hosted a virtual side event in support of the Call to Action on Sustainable Urbanisation across the Commonwealth. High-level Event Pre-COP26, October 2021
At a high-level event convened on the eve of COP26 by key Commonwealth partners and The Prince’s Foundation, participants considered ways in which the Commonwealth can respond to the ‘triple threat’ of climate change, rapid urbanisation and the Covid-19 pandemic, and the need for collaboration if the targets are to be met within the limited time now available. Building Better Data, July 2021
The Commonwealth Association of Architects, in collaboration with the International Growth Centre, Ordnance Survey and Nesta Challenges, was pleased to host a series of three inter-linked online events the aim of which explored how we can ‘Build Better Data to Support Sustainable Urbanisation in the Commonwealth’. The series was held on 05, 06 and 07 July 2021 in support of the Call to Action on Sustainable Urbanisation in the Commonwealth. Online Programme, June-Sept 2020
From 24 June 2020 until 02 September 2020, the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), the Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP), and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), with support from The Prince’s Foundation, the Ministry of Infrastructure of Rwanda (MININFRA), the Ministry of Local Government of Rwanda (MINALOC), the Commonwealth Engineers Council (CEC)and the Commonwealth Association of Surveying and Land Economy (CASLE), worked together with a range of partners to curate an online programme on sustainable urbanisation, in the Commonwealth. Click here to find out more details and watch the recordings from each session.
