PROJECT OVERVIEW 

10 million cycle rickshaw drivers in India work in difficult conditions for minimal pay. They must also spend a big chunk of their income paying expensive rickshaw rental fees. The alternative, auto-rickshaws, are also expensive for drivers to rent, and although the work is less physically demanding, they are polluting and noisy due to their diesel and petrol engines. Many women in socially conservative communities have been blocked from driving rickshaws, leaving them with few opportunities for employment other than domestic work.

Social enterprise SMV Green aims to eliminate the drudgery of cycle rickshaw work by helping drivers switch to electric rickshaws (e-rickshaws). It provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ for drivers that covers financing, vehicle supply, licensing and permits, money management training, road safety training, and after-sales service.

SMV’s radical Vahini programme has trained some of India’s first woman rickshaw drivers, creating secure incomes for them and improving safety and security for their female passengers. SMV Green is currently active in Varanasi, Prayagraj (formerly known as Allahabad), Lucknow and Patna.

Repowering helps communities fund, install and manage renewable power stations on social housing blocks and community buildings. Solar energy systems on social housing estates in London are generating valuable community funds, and the organisation’s holistic approach tackles fuel poverty while providing employment and mentoring opportunities for young people and local residents.

Started by a group of volunteers, Repowering London is now a Community Benefit Society with a very powerful vision, working in partnership with Local Authorities and community groups to deliver local solutions to local energy problems. A collaborative approach ensures that the interests of the community are at the heart of any project, and its residents are included in every step of the way.

Through Repowering’s projects, communities have raised more than £150,000 to improve their neighbourhoods – while more than 100 young people have benefited from paid internships.

PROJECT OVERVIEW 

Rapid urbanisation in Kenya means that the current housing deficit stands at over 2 million homes – with an estimated 61% of Kenyans living in slums. Several challenges currently limit the housing supply including high cost of land, high construction costs and outdated construction materials and methods. Kenya remains over-dependent on cement-based materials delivered through highly wasteful and inefficient methods which harm the environment.

Reall recognises that construction must be climate smart and have partnered with BuildX, Africa’s first B Corp Certified Design-Build company, to deliver greener affordable housing, without compromising on quality and design. Together, BuildX and Reall are creating construction sustainability through sourcing local materials which significantly reduce carbon emissions. They are also piloting standardised housing construction which leverages technology – maximising recycling and reuse and reducing waste and emissions.

PROJECT OVERVIEW 

Kampala faces a lack of revenue to be able to invest in infrastructure and services needed for sustainable urban development. Over a number of years, the city has looked to address this through the digitalisation and automation of revenue and expenditure systems, building in-house capacity, and enhancing the social contract between citizens and the city (click here for more information). The eCitie platform makes online payment of taxes and compliance much easier. PROJECT OVERVIEW 

LOCAL is a mechanism to promote climate change resilient communities and economics by increasing financing for and investment in climate change adaptation at the local level. LOCAL combines performance–based climate resilience grants which ensure programming and verification of climate expenditures at the local level, with technical and capacity building. The project is designed to re-enforce existing national and sub-national financial and fiscal delivery systems, and it uses the demonstration effect to trigger further flows for local adaptation, including national fiscal transfers and global climate finance for local authorities through their central governments. The project is built upon national systems, the performance-based climate resilience grants system comprises of the following key elements:

Launched in January 2019, the One City Plan describes where Bristol wants to be by 2050, and how city partners will work together to create a fairer, healthy and sustainable city. The One City Approach brings together a wide range of public, private, and third sector partners within Bristol. They share an aim to make Bristol a fair, healthy and sustainable city. A city of hope and aspiration, where everyone can share in its success. One of the key messages to the city is that no single organisation can solve the interconnected challenges facing Bristol alone. The One City Approach reconstitutes the City Council as a convening space for the energy and expertise of the city’s businesses, universities, public services, sports clubs, international communities and the voluntary and community sector. By bringing together partners from across the city they can deliver sustainable inclusive development that is integrated and improves connection with communities by including under-represented groups, and allowing them to shape the plans. The One City Plan is structured around six themes; Connectivity, Economy, Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Homes and Communities, and Learning and Skills. All the initiatives within the One City Plan are underpinned by the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which provide an internationally recognised framework to benchmark the city’s aspirations and progress. In Pakistan, the affordable housing challenge is vast with many bottlenecks. One of the main blockages is the lack of housing finance for people on low incomes. These people have been systematically misunderstood or excluded by mainstream mortgage lenders.

Reall have invested in affordable housing property developer, the Ansaar Management Company (AMC), who has successfully launched a pioneering new mortgage product in partnership with the semi-state-owned lending institution HBFC.

AMC and HBFC’s mortgage product is available to people in both formal and informal employment. They have de-risked lending by AMC withholding titles until the loan amount is recovered as a guarantee to HBFC. Community development officers maintain the housing site which increases property value and reassures HBFC that returns will exceed sale value in the case of customer default.

The mortgage product for people on low incomes is the first of its kind in Pakistan. With more than 60 mortgages granted so far, the initial performance has been outstanding with average repayment rates of 80% in 30 days, increasing to 99% in 90 days. This data is proving the commercial viability of lending to this market segment whilst creating opportunities to scale up, resolve the escalating urbanisation crisis and unleash the developmental and economic potential of affordable housing.

Rwanda, like many other African countries, had multiple, overlapping tenure systems, with no formal or consistent way of accounting for them in a land register or cadastre. This resulted in rising informal land markets as well as associated increase in land prices and conflict. In order to address this, the government along with development partners rolled out a large-scale Land Tenure Regularisation Programme. By using local para-surveyors and digital technologies, they managed to do this at a cost of US$7 per parcel. This was first piloted in 2007, and then rolled out in full, ending in 2013. Click here for more information on this project.

Uganda’s relatively young population, where close to 60% of the population below 18 years of age, and over 75% below the age of 35 years, is central to it’s country’s development towards a middle-income country. Traditionally having relied on donor funding for investment in social services, which is now in decline, there is a recognition of a need for greater transparency and accountability, and more efficient implementation. Value for money is now a priority, to ensure that with existing resources, integral services for child welfare and development can be maximised. The government is taking steps to improve monitoring of the impact of investments on social outcomes, having set up the Budget Monitoring and Accountability Unit to provide a framework to inform better spending decisions. Click here for more information.

Ga Mashie initiative involved slum upgrading and poverty allevistion that was built around strong community participation and empowerment through integration of a community fund to support economic activites for youth and women. As part of activities under the PSUP project implemented within the Ga mashie community, a community fund has been established to assist with the development and upgrading of the community. The Ga Mashie Development Committee (CDC) have introduced a microfinance to support the teaming traders within the community. The microfinance aims at providing formal financial services to poor and lower-income businesses as well as others who are systematically excluded from the financial system. The support to local businesses is to ensure that there is financial inclusion of all working age adults having access to credit, savings and insurance from formal financial services. Community Managed Funds (CMF) was initiated to enable community groups apply for grants to implement projects in the settlements and setting up of micro-finance guarantee facility with local bank for affordable business loans to benefit youth and women. This has grown to Micro-credit with more than 5,000 members Over 5KM of alleys paved with blocks (locally made with local labour) resulting in improved public space, safety and flooding for over 100, 000 residents 7 CMF projects implemented by more than 300 youth and women resulting improved garbage collection, water access and public spaces Community and AMA partnership improved with devolution of upgrading activities to neighbourhoods.
