Sustainable Bricks Build Opportunities For Young People in Uganda

PROJECT OVERVIEW 

Uganda has one of the fastest growing populations on earth. Roughly 80% of the population is younger than 30; many of these young people lack employable skills and youth unemployment is a growing problem. Meanwhile, there is high demand for new housing, schools and other infrastructure. Haileybury Youth Trusts answers both challenges by training young people in sustainable construction techniques, providing skills and promoting greener building.

The traditional hand-moulded fired brick, commonly used in Uganda, creates demand for local trees to fuel the brick-making kilns – one of the biggest contributors to the destruction of the country’s forests. Requiring no firewood and less cement, Interlocking Stabilised Soil Blocks (ISSBs), a compressed earth brick, are an economic and low carbon alternative.

Training young people in building with ISSBs provides them with masonry skills and the ability to find employment. Haileybury Youth Trust’s projects include affordable housing, latrines, washrooms, kitchens, school dormitories and classrooms, and rainwater harvesting tanks.

PROJECT OVERVIEW 

Launched in January 2019, the One City Plan describes where Bristol wants to be by 2050, and how city partners will work together to create a fairer, healthy and sustainable city. The One City Approach brings together a wide range of public, private, and third sector partners within Bristol. They share an aim to make Bristol a fair, healthy and sustainable city. A city of hope and aspiration, where everyone can share in its success. One of the key messages to the city is that no single organisation can solve the interconnected challenges facing Bristol alone. The One City Approach reconstitutes the City Council as a convening space for the energy and expertise of the city’s businesses, universities, public services, sports clubs, international communities and the voluntary and community sector. By bringing together partners from across the city they can deliver sustainable inclusive development that is integrated and improves connection with communities by including under-represented groups, and allowing them to shape the plans. The One City Plan is structured around six themes; Connectivity, Economy, Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Homes and Communities, and Learning and Skills. All the initiatives within the One City Plan are underpinned by the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which provide an internationally recognised framework to benchmark the city’s aspirations and progress. PROJECT OVERVIEW 

Uganda’s relatively young population, where close to 60% of the population below 18 years of age, and over 75% below the age of 35 years, is central to it’s country’s development towards a middle-income country. Traditionally having relied on donor funding for investment in social services, which is now in decline, there is a recognition of a need for greater transparency and accountability, and more efficient implementation. Value for money is now a priority, to ensure that with existing resources, integral services for child welfare and development can be maximised. The government is taking steps to improve monitoring of the impact of investments on social outcomes, having set up the Budget Monitoring and Accountability Unit to provide a framework to inform better spending decisions. Click here for more information.

PROJECT OVERVIEW 

Ga Mashie initiative involved slum upgrading and poverty allevistion that was built around strong community participation and empowerment through integration of a community fund to support economic activites for youth and women. As part of activities under the PSUP project implemented within the Ga mashie community, a community fund has been established to assist with the development and upgrading of the community. The Ga Mashie Development Committee (CDC) have introduced a microfinance to support the teaming traders within the community. The microfinance aims at providing formal financial services to poor and lower-income businesses as well as others who are systematically excluded from the financial system. The support to local businesses is to ensure that there is financial inclusion of all working age adults having access to credit, savings and insurance from formal financial services. Community Managed Funds (CMF) was initiated to enable community groups apply for grants to implement projects in the settlements and setting up of micro-finance guarantee facility with local bank for affordable business loans to benefit youth and women. This has grown to Micro-credit with more than 5,000 members Over 5KM of alleys paved with blocks (locally made with local labour) resulting in improved public space, safety and flooding for over 100, 000 residents 7 CMF projects implemented by more than 300 youth and women resulting improved garbage collection, water access and public spaces Community and AMA partnership improved with devolution of upgrading activities to neighbourhoods. PROJECT OVERVIEW 

In the Klang Valley (Greater KL), Malaysia, nearly 1 in 4 residents live in public housing which has many major issues that need to be addressed such as old housing stock and infrastructure, lack of social mobility and empowerment, poor job security and other related systemic challenges. The K2K programme has been designed in response to Covid-19 to test ways to engage with the community during movement control restrictions and deliver aid efficiently and transparently. The project has wider aims to reduce residents’ cost of living, improve standard of living and strengthen management systems in urban poor communities within Malaysian public housing schemes. A digital platform links residents with aid and support services in an efficient and transparent way that also generates community insights. In addition to food aid delivery, the programme is now focussing on relieving mental stress, building social cohesion and skills development. The programme delivery combines both traditional and digital methods of implementation.

New Zealand is a highly diverse society made up of different ethnicities and cultures, characterised by different languages and customs. Engaging and consulting with communities and the public is promoted under planning legislation in New Zealand and is becoming increasingly important for decision-makers as they look to bolster the robustness of their decision-making. Through this pilot project, Beca Ltd sought to understand how communities that historically do not participate in traditional engagement techniques would engage through a digital platform allowing them to participate in a time, place, and language they are comfortable with. The Talanoa Project was launched as an investigation into an innovative engagement tool to connect with Auckland’s Samoan community, the ‘silent majority’. Beca Ltd wanted to understand if using artificial intelligence (AI) technology could break through cultural barriers and if it should be embedded as a trusted method within our wider engagement strategies and plans as public feedback is sought to inform development projects.
